It was the summer of 1976 and a simpler time. With no internet and only a handful of TV stations, worldwide people were glued to their TV’s watching the Olympics in Montreal. Bruce Jenner won the gold in the Decathlon and instantly became an international super star. Soon his face was everywhere, from magazine covers to cereal boxes, and he became a motivational speaker at global events.

“If you want to take your mission in life to the next level, if you’re stuck and you don’t know how to rise, don’t look outside yourself. Look inside. Don’t let your fears keep you mired in the crowd. Abolish your fears and raise your commitment level to the point of no return, and I guarantee you that the Champion Within will burst forth to propel you toward victory.”
Bruce Jenner

The Decathlon is a two day epic Olympic event, the events included require not only optimal fitness, but skill in a variety of areas for the following: 100-metre dash, running long broad jump, shot puthigh jump, and 400-metre run, 110-metre hurdles, discus throwpole vaultjavelin throw, and 1,500-metre run. While the above video shows only the 400-meter run, the full documentary below discussed Jenner’s journey to victory.

While Jenner might have been a hugely motivated athlete, he obviously brought that ethic into his family life, with his daughter Kendall Jenner recently quipping “I feel like I grew up too fast a long time ago” in a Wall Street Journal article on youth. She is only 19 years old.
