Happy Mother’s Day! Everyday!

Happy Mother’s Day! Everyday!

I love my Mom, really I do! But oh – how she can test my patience! OH MY GOODNESS, OH MY GOODNESS, OH MY GOODNESS! The indescribable rage I have in my head right now is almost too much for me to bear. The only thing I want to do is to storm out of the house, slam the door behind me, walk up an enormous hill, and never come back to my crazy household. Seriously, I bet there are millions of young people out there who are in exactly the same position as me; when you and your Mom are having the worst fight ever, nobody is willing to back down, and all you want to do is to storm out of the front door tears streaming down your face, vowing never to come back home. On most occasions, this tantrum is shared, word for word with my best friend, as we basically experience the same situation at least a few times a month. But her situation is usually about studies, whereas mine… well, mine was actually about cookies… I mean, what’s wrong with just having a little mess in my bedroom? It’s my bedroom! I demand the right to make it look as if a clothes bomb has gone off amid the organised chaos, right? Every now and then I’ve got to add some personality to my space; after all, I am an artist and I am supposed to be rebellious and insane (sometimes!). Which is why, I like to play around with food sometimes to explore my creativity and originality… I know…it’s deep stuff, and “Drama Queen” is not my nickname! Looking...

Mother’s Day in Thailand

The 12 of August is the birthday of Her Majesty, Queen Sirikit of Thailand. In honour of the Queen, this day is also recognised as National Mother’s Day. Queen Sirikit’s story is not one exclusively of privilege. It is a story of romance, self-discipline, courage, motherhood, devotion and, above all, support for her husband and service to the people of Thailand. Care and compassion is the central focus of Queen Sirikit’s life. The Thai people have a deep reverence for their monarchy, as well as mothers, so this is a very important day of celebration for Thai people both at home and worldwide. Thailand enjoys a rich history and culture. Although sometimes engaged in conflicts with neighbouring rulers, over centuries Thailand’s monarchy helped the nation maintain its political autonomy. Thailand developed a complex, beautiful society with many distinctive traditions; today over 67 million people reside in Thailand. Motherhood remains an important value in Thai culture, as does respect for the beauty and importance of the natural world. Recently, Thailand gained international media attention due to the efforts of Sangduen “Lek” Chailert. Born in a small village in rural northern Thailand, as a child this remarkable Thai woman grew to respect and appreciate the loveliness of the countryside and its plants and animal life. Her family cared for an elephant, and she developed a...

Joys of a Newborn

If you have not used it, Yelp is a website with loads of useful reviews, as well as a place to find things around you. We searched ‘tacos’ in Hong Kong, just to be random, and found 45 entries. However, as with Amazon or any other site with reviews, these are sometimes used to spread humorous, facetious comments. One very clever mommy blogger, The Ugly Volvo, created a Yelp for newborn babies. The reviews are hilarious, from “SUPER strict no return policy” to “we wound up with two of them (not what we ordered)”, plus complaints about grandparents skewing the feedback and very amusing customer service type replies from ‘Newborn Baby’. Without further ado, here are some of the choice reviews:         That last one was by The Ugly Volvo blogger and rounded out the humorous posts above it with this loving thought on the complexities and joys of parenthood “Will this experience be horrible beyond belief or too wonderful to put into words, the best answer that I can give you is, “Yes.””...

Celebrating Mother’s Day: Activites

This is the second of two blog posts on celebrating Mother’s Day. While this one is focused on activities, the is post on Wednesday covered suggested Mother’s Day gifts. Mother’s Day is this weekend and many people are already settled on how they are going to make it special for their mother, partner, grandmothers, aunts or other women who have supported and nurtured them. Maybe you and Mum or your favourite aunt have a tradition of choosing plants for her yard and spending the day gardening? More sporting families may like to indulge in a bit of hiking or water sports together. Of course a get together with lots of delicious food on the BBQ is also a favourite in Australia. Following are some other ideas on how to make this a day she’ll remember: Home-Made Dinner As I get older, time with family seems to become limited to holidays and birthdays, meaning less time with my mom. This year could just be about bonding and having a nice meal with Mom. I’m sure she wants to hear what’s been going on in your life in person, not just over the phone. Go to her house or have her over while you prepare her favourite meal. Summer Kick-Off For active families in the Norther Hemisphere, let Mother’s Day be the first family activity of the summer, while for those below the equator it may be your first occasion to plan something to take advantage of the cooler autumn weather. Each week plan a family event....

Celebrating Mother’s Day: Gifts

This is the first of two blog posts on celebrating Mother’s Day, this post is on gifts and the one on Friday will cover suggested Mother’s Day activities. This year, Mother’s Day will fall on May 10th. It is a special occasion  that people often celebrate by taking their mother out for a special dinner. Traditionally, people in the United States wear Carnation corsages at this time, while Chrysanthemums are favoured by people in Australia and New Zealand. A brightly coloured corsage indicates a living mother in the family; a creamy white one honours the memory of a beloved deceased mother. Mother’s Day recognises the vital role mums play in the lives of their children. A Beautiful National Custom A custom of gift giving arose in Australia, too, in part as a result of the kindness of Mrs. Janet Heyden, a resident of Sydney during the 1920s. In 1924, she discovered that many of the female patients living at the Newinton State Home for Women were separated from their children during this important time of year. She responded by encouraging the local community to bring them Mother’s Day gifts so they would not feel excluded. In many locations around Australia, Mother’s Day today represents a time for communities to recognize mothers and to support charitable causes at a local level through fairs, organized walks and other public fund raising activities. What is Anti-Chrysanthemumism?

What is Anti-Chrysanthemumism?

In Australia the Chryssy is quite popular and especially holds favour as a Mother’s Day gift. I assume that the reason for this is that the word “mum” is found in Chrysanthemum. Every year, when Mother’s day rolls around, thousands of cut and potted Chryssys are sold around Australia to be presented to Mums. It has become a huge tradition. Despite the overwhelming numbers sold, I keep finding people that, at the mere mention of Chryssys, will exclaim that they are their least favourite flower. When a few people told me they hate Chrysanthemums I felt compelled to explore the issue further. What can make people feel so negatively about these rather innocent looking flowers? It may, or may not, be a surprise to you that this sentiment is not at all new. People in Europe have been sharing these ill feelings towards Chryssys for a very long time. I found mention of an article written in 1892 by C.S. Sargent that describes the wane of popularity of Chrysanthemums in society. Today, across Europe, Chrysanthemums are the most common flowers taken to cemeteries and have a very strong association with death. In France, for example, it could be offensive, to bring them to a dinner party as a gift. It is commonly thought that they are easy and inexpensive flowers to grow and buy. This is not necessarily a good thing though, as it can lower the perceived value of the flowers and they can become less desirable. Things that are...

A Mother’s Day Story From the Distant Past

As the year advances, it sometimes surprises busy people to realise that Mother’s Day rapidly approaches. The second Sunday in May inspires warm celebrations of motherhood in many parts of the world. Families take some time to express their love for the women who contribute so much to daily life. Millions of people share bouquets of flowers at this time, sending fresh roses, daisies or even a single mum to convey profound gratitude. They sometimes give other small gifts to mothers, too, as tokens of their esteem and undying affection. One of the best ways of sharing Mother’s Day involves symbolism. A beautiful Mother’s Day story from the distant past illuminates this idea very well… Over a century before the birth of Christ, the City of Rome developed a thriving cultural life. Many aristocratic Roman families enjoyed comfortable lifestyles, supported by the efforts of large numbers of poor Roman workers, labourers and slaves. During this period, two of the most influential reformers seeking to improve the working conditions of ordinary Romans by according them more civic rights were two brothers, Tiberius and Gaius Gracchi. Their mother, Cornelia, often earned praise for the way she had raised them. After a happy marriage that produced 12 children, Cornelia had become a young widow when her high ranking husband passed away. She impressed the people of Rome favourably with her modest...
